GENERAL SURGERY

The Surgical Center at Mid-Valley Hospital offers a wide range of surgical services, including inpatient, outpatient, day surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Our highly skilled, caring staff of physicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses and technicians is dedicated to providing quality patient care.

If you are having surgery at Mid-Valley Hospital, here is important information to know.

  • For your own safety, a responsible adult MUST drive you home.
  • Bathe or shower, using an antibacterial soap to reduce the chance of infection.
  • If you take daily medication, check with your physician about what to do the morning of your surgery regarding your medication.
  • DO NOT EAT or DRINK anything after midnight – No water, gum, candy, coffee, chewing tobacco unless instructed otherwise. If you do any of the above, your surgery may be cancelled.
  • Do not wear makeup or nail polish
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to take off and put back on.
  • Leave your valuables at home.
  • If you wear glasses, contacts, or hearing aids, bring a case to store them in while you are in surgery.
  • If you wear dentures, removable bridgework, etc., they must be removed before surgery or as designated by the anesthesia department policy.
  • If you have a cold, a fever of 100 degrees or higher, a skin rash, or an infection of any kind, notify your physician before coming in for your surgery.
  • If you are asked to be at the hospital before 6:00 am, please enter through the emergency department.
  • Bring crutches if applicable.
  • After you leave the operating room, you will be transferred to the recovery room for approximately one hour. You will be cared for by our trained personnel in the Phase II area where you will be given a light snack and prepared for your return home.
  • Someone responsible should stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery if possible.
  • You may be transferred to a hospital room if your surgery is after hours or if your physician requires you to stay overnight for observation.

Special Tips

  • Please do not bring your children with you to the hospital
  • During surgery, please plan to be here 3-6 hours.
  • Infants scheduled for surgery must have their feeding discussed during his/her pre-admission appointment. Generally, for infants, we suggest that you bring a bottle, a favorite toy and/or a blanket.
  • If there is a possibility that you are pregnant, please be sure to discuss this with your physician.
  • If you are given a prescription for medication after your surgery, the prescription will need to be filled at your pharmacy of choice.
  • If you have any problems, please contact your physician. You are also welcomed to call the emergency department at Mid-Valley Hospital at (509) 826-1760 if you are unable to reach your physician.
  • If you are discharged the same day as your procedure, you will receive a follow-up telephone call within 24-48 hours. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with the nurse.
  • Due to limited space in our waiting room, we encourage you to only have one person accompanying you. Your care partner will be asked to stay in a separate waiting area.
